Division 04 · ITX · Series-Circuit Isolation Device

Isolation Transformer Testing & Commissioning

Every AGL fixture on a series circuit is isolated from the CCR by its own isolation transformer — hundreds of them per circuit, most buried, submerged, or embedded in-pavement. Division 04 verifies that each transformer is correctly identified, correctly rated, physically sound, properly installed, correctly connected on both primary and secondary sides, electrically healthy, free from unacceptable water ingress or mechanical defects, and capable of delivering the required secondary output under the applicable load condition.

Philosophy: a transformer is evaluated as a complete chain — correct transformer → correct rating → correct installation → healthy winding → healthy insulation → correct primary connection → correct secondary connection → correct connector → correct cable lead → correct load → correct output → accepted transformer. Division 02 covers the general electrical testing framework; Division 04 is the dedicated transformer-specific expansion of that scope.

Before Testing Begins

Two conditions should be established before electrical testing of any isolation transformer begins.

Numerical Limits Are Not Universal

  • Test voltages for insulation resistance testing come from the approved manufacturer/project procedure
  • Insulation resistance acceptance limits are transformer- and design-specific — never apply an arbitrary universal figure
  • Winding resistance and voltage-ratio tolerances depend on transformer design and test conditions
  • Output and loading acceptance values are taken from the applicable transformer/project documentation

Division Boundary

  • Division 02 performs the general electrical testing framework across the AGL system
  • Division 04 provides the dedicated, transformer-specific verification and commissioning scope
  • Connector identification, continuity, contact, mating, locking, and sealing also sit within the broader Cable & Connector Testing division
  • No transformer is released for AGL circuit commissioning until every applicable item in this division is closed
