  3. Unstable Output — May indicate CCR control, load or circuit problems.
  4. Earth Fault — May originate from primary cable, transformer, connector, secondary cable, fixture or moisture ingress.
  5. Open Series Circuit — Can interrupt the complete series circuit and trigger CCR protection.
  6. High Circuit Voltage — Can occur when circuit impedance/load conditions change and must be investigated.
  7. Cooling Failure — Blocked ventilation or failed fans can cause overheating.
  8. Protection Failure — A CCR may continue operating while a protection/monitoring function is unavailable.
  9. ALCMS Communication Failure — The CCR may operate locally while remote command/status communication is unavailable.
  10. Command/Feedback Mismatch — ALCMS may indicate one condition while the physical CCR/lighting system is in another state.
  11. Incorrect Brightness Step — Commanded intensity and actual output may differ because of configuration or equipment faults.
  12. Intermittent Circuit Fault — Can originate from poor connectors, damaged cables, transformers or fixtures.

Division 13 — CCR Golden Rule

"A CCR is the controlled power source of an AGL series circuit, not simply a high-current power supply. Safe and reliable operation depends on correct current regulation, circuit integrity, protection, earth-fault monitoring, thermal management, brightness control, local/remote operation and accurate feedback to the ALCMS. Every CCR command must ultimately be verified against the actual lighting response."

Division 13 — SOP Approval Principle

Exact CCR ratings, output-current steps, output-voltage limits, protection settings, earth-fault thresholds, temperature limits, cooling requirements, control logic, communication protocol and ALCMS interface shall be taken from the approved CCR datasheet/manual, project specification, approved electrical design, ALCMS philosophy and applicable aerodrome requirements.

Generic values shall not be substituted for manufacturer-approved settings — approved project specifications and the CCR manufacturer's instructions shall always take precedence.

Reference Basis

Technical references behind the procedures in this division:

  • FAA AC 150/5345-10, Specification for Constant Current Regulators and Regulator Monitors — CCR construction, output accuracy and monitoring.
  • IEC 61822, Constant current regulators for airfield lighting — regulator requirements and tests.
  • IEC 61821, Maintenance of AGL constant current series circuits — maintenance, insulation monitoring and safety.
  • FAA AC 150/5340-26 and AC 150/5340-30 — maintenance practice and series circuit design details.

Approved project specifications, manufacturer instructions and the airport's own procedures take precedence, as stated in the precedence note above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about CCR & Series Circuit SOPs in the AGL SOP Library.

Q1What is Division 13 — CCR & Series Circuit SOPs?

Division 13 is a set of 25 procedures (SOP-256 to SOP-280, Rev 0) for the AGL Constant Current Regulator and the series circuits it energizes. It covers installation, pre-commissioning, controlled start-up and shutdown, local and remote (ALCMS) operation, brightness-step selection, output current and voltage verification, protection and alarm verification, earth-fault and overtemperature monitoring, series-circuit energization and de-energization, maintenance and functional testing.

Q2Where do CCR ratings and protection settings come from?

From the approved CCR datasheet or manual, project specification, approved electrical design, ALCMS philosophy and applicable aerodrome requirements. This covers output-current steps, voltage limits, protection settings, earth-fault thresholds, temperature limits and communication protocol. Generic values must not replace manufacturer-approved settings.

Q3How is a CCR started up?

Confirm start-up authorization, that personnel are clear and the series circuit is ready, that doors and panels are closed and the emergency stop is reset. Energize the incoming supply, check the display and self-diagnostics, start using the approved control method at the minimum or approved initial intensity, and verify output current and voltage (SOP-258).

Q4How is a CCR shut down?

Confirm authorization, reduce output to the approved minimum state where applicable, stop the CCR using normal control, and verify output current falls and the series circuit is de-energized. Isolate the incoming supply if required, record the shutdown, and apply LOTO if maintenance is planned (SOP-259).

Q5Can brightness-step values be assumed?

No. Brightness-step values come from the approved CCR configuration, not generic values (SOP-262). After selecting a step, verify actual output current, the lighting response and the local or remote display indication, and record any abnormality.

Q6What must be verified before energizing a series circuit?

The work permit is cleared, personnel are clear, tools removed, FOD inspection completed, circuit identification confirmed, LOTO removed only by authorized persons, transformers and connectors secured and circuit integrity verified. The series loop must be confirmed complete with no open circuit, and ATC/Operations coordination completed where required (SOP-275).
