Initial Issue

Critical technical control — An isolating transformer should be assessed as a complete electrical and mechanical interface, not simply as a passive component. A transformer with a healthy-looking housing may still have a critical defect at the connector, cable lead, insulation, sealing, pit, or secondary interface. Where suspected insulation deterioration, water ingress, abnormal heating, connector damage, or electrical abnormality is identified, the condition should be escalated for electrical testing and engineering assessment.

Division-Wide Requirements

Common classification scheme, workflow and records that apply across all 12 Division 08 inspection topics.

A. Standard Inspection Classification

Every observation should be assigned an appropriate status:

NormalEquipment/condition satisfactory and operating as expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about isolating transformer inspection in the AGL Inspection Handbook.

Q1What is Division 08 — Isolating Transformer Inspection in the AGL Inspection Handbook?

Division 08 contains 12 published topics (Level 2, scheduled and preventive). It gives a standardized methodology for assessing the identification, rating, electrical interface, insulation condition, mechanical integrity, environmental condition and installation condition of AGL isolating transformers, the interface component between the series circuit and every AGL fixture.

Q2What does the isolating transformer inspection cover?

It covers nameplate and rating verification, housing and sealing, primary and secondary connections, cable leads, connectors, mounting and position, transformer pits, water ingress, corrosion and asset traceability.

Q3What is the isolating transformer inspection workflow?

The sequence identifies the transformer, verifies nameplate, rating and circuit association, inspects housing, sealing, primary and secondary leads, connectors, mounting and mechanical condition, then inspects the pit and checks water, drainage and corrosion. It reviews electrical test records and defect history, then classifies, records, escalates, repairs or replaces, tests, verifies and closes.

Q4What status classifications are used in this division?

Every observation is assigned one of four statuses. Normal means the equipment or condition is satisfactory and operating as expected. Defective means an abnormality or defect exists but the equipment remains operational or the condition does not require immediate withdrawal. Unserviceable means the equipment or system is not available for its intended function. Immediate Action Required means the condition presents an operational, electrical, safety or airside risk requiring immediate escalation and action.

Q5What should an isolating transformer inspection record include?

Beyond the date, inspector details, observations, status, defect description, action taken, notifications, corrective-action reference, closure and sign-off, the record includes the transformer identification, pit and location, the associated circuit and fixture reference, and the nameplate and rating verification result.

Q6Does the transformer inspection replace electrical testing?

No. It does not replace insulation-resistance testing, continuity testing, load or primary-secondary electrical testing, circuit troubleshooting, photometric testing of the fed fixture, or engineering assessment of an identified electrical abnormality.

Q7Do airport procedures take precedence over this handbook?

Yes. This handbook is an uncontrolled educational reference, not an approved procedure. The airport's approved inspection schedule, SMS procedures, ATC instructions, NOTAM procedures and local aerodrome regulations always take precedence, and the current revision of any official document should be verified before use.

Q8Can I download a printable checklist for each inspection topic?

Yes. Each inspection topic has a Download as Word option that produces an uncontrolled Word checklist template (description, a tick-box inspection table and an inspector sign-off block) for personal reference and internal training, to be reviewed and adopted under the user’s own document control.
