Airfield Lighting Terminology & Glossary Notes
Airfield lighting terminology
Airfield lighting terminology is the shared vocabulary of the field: the names of lights, circuits, equipment, tests and standards. Using the same terms in specifications, drawings and fault reports avoids confusion between designers, contractors and maintenance staff.
Airfield lighting glossary
This airfield lighting glossary lists terms, abbreviations and short definitions across electrical systems, fixtures, photometry, testing, maintenance and standards. Use the search box and the category filters above to find a term, then follow the related pages for the full engineering explanation.
Runway touchdown zone lights
Runway touchdown zone lights are the rows of white lights in the touchdown zone of a precision approach runway, helping pilots judge the touchdown point and keep the aircraft aligned in low visibility. Their arrangement and use follow the applicable standard and the runway category.
Approach lighting spacing
Approach lighting spacing is the distance between lights or light bars along the approach lighting system. It is fixed by the system type and the standard, and it affects the pilot's visual cues and the length of cable needed on each circuit.
