300 Questions, Eight Topics

Every question sits in one of eight topics that follow the order of real site work: installation procedures and cabling, light fittings, isolating transformers, inspection and testing, Megger insulation testing, continuity testing, commissioning, and site acceptance with documentation. The bank leans toward working practice: what to check, in what order, what a good reading looks like, and what to do when a test fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers about the installation and commissioning question bank, how the drill and scoring work, and the testing and commissioning steps it covers.

Q1What is the Installation & Commissioning question bank?

It is a 300-question reference and drill on AGL installation, testing and commissioning: setting out and cable installation, light fittings, isolating transformers, inspection, Megger insulation testing, continuity testing, series-circuit commissioning, site acceptance and handover documentation. Every question has a model answer, an explanation, key terms and standards references.

Q2What topics does the question bank cover?

Eight topics: Installation Procedures & Cable Work (80), Light Fitting Installation (35), Transformer Installation (30), Testing & Inspection (30), Megger Insulation Testing (30), Continuity Testing (20), Commissioning (40), Site Acceptance & Documentation (35).

Q3What difficulty levels are included?

Four levels: Beginner (50), Intermediate (145), Advanced (95) and Expert (10). Expert questions are practical site scenarios on commissioning, site acceptance and handover. If terminology is still new, start with the AGL Fundamentals bank first.

Q4What question formats does the bank use?

Technical explanation (57), procedure (41), quality control (29), numerical (26), practical scenario (21) and a long tail of functional-test, test-procedure, installation-error, safety and documentation questions. About 54 are framed as tests or inspections.

Q5How does Drill Mode work, and how is my answer scored?

Drill Mode gives a shuffled run through the bank, filtered by level and topic if you choose. Type your own answer and check it, or just reveal the model answer. Typed answers are scored locally in your browser by weighted key-term matching with stemming and typo tolerance, plus overall wording overlap. It is a close approximation, not true AI grading, so always read the model answer.

Q6Why test an AGL series circuit before energising it?

Installation faults such as damaged cable insulation, wrong connections or an open circuit are far cheaper to find with the circuit isolated and de-energised. A series circuit must also be complete before the constant current regulator is started, because a CCR driving current into an open loop can develop dangerously high output voltage unless its open-circuit protection operates. The bank covers pre-energisation checks, insulation-resistance (Megger) testing, continuity and resistance checks, and why the circuit must be complete and sound first.

Q7What does a Megger test tell you on an AGL circuit?

It measures insulation resistance between the conductor and earth, showing whether cable, connectors and isolating transformers are dry and undamaged. Thirty questions cover the principle, test voltage selection, preparation and safe discharge, reading interpretation, low, high and falling readings, moisture and temperature effects, recording and trend comparison.

Q8What is continuity testing used for?

It confirms the series circuit forms a complete, low-resistance path and helps locate open circuits or high-resistance joints. The bank covers cable, connector, transformer and fitting continuity, expected resistance values, intermittent connections, fault location and recording results.

Q9What happens during AGL commissioning?

Commissioning moves from pre-commissioning inspection through energisation, CCR startup, current-step verification, series-circuit verification, fixture and brightness operation, local and remote control, ALCMS interface, alarms, interlocks and protection checks, then photometric and alignment verification, night inspection, defect rectification, punch-list closure and handover.

Q10Does the bank cover isolating transformers and light fittings?

Yes. Thirty questions cover isolating transformer installation (identification, rating verification, primary and secondary connection, housing, placement, burial, sealing and earthing), and thirty-five cover light fittings: elevated and inset lights, base and base-plate installation, orientation, levelling, aiming, torque, height verification and alignment.

Q11Which standards does the question bank refer to?

Answers are mainly framed against FAA AC 150/5340-26C (148 questions, maintenance of airport visual aid facilities) and FAA AC 150/5340-30J (135, design and installation details), with equipment specifications such as AC 150/5345-46F (39), 150/5345-47C (33), 150/5345-56B (19) and 150/5345-42K (15). Project drawings and specifications always govern the actual installation.

Q12Is this useful for AGL job interviews?

Yes. The 41 procedure, 21 practical-scenario and 10 expert questions mirror how interviewers probe site practice: the order of tests, how you read a Megger result, what you do when a circuit fails commissioning, and what goes into the handover pack.
