What is a taxiway intersection?
The point where taxiways meet or cross, creating a shared surface with curved corners and a lighting layout that follows its shape.
A taxiway intersection is where two or more taxiways meet or cross. The paved area common to the routes is the intersection area, and aircraft on any of them can pass through it.
Layouts fall into three common shapes: a perpendicular crossing, a T-intersection where one taxiway joins another, and an angled intersection. The pavement is widened at the corners with curved fillets so a turning aircraft stays on the paved surface. Green centreline lights mark each route and blue edge lights, where provided, follow the pavement outline, fillets included.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1What is a taxiway intersection?
The place where two or more taxiways meet or cross, so a section of pavement is shared by the routes that pass through it.
Q2What types of taxiway intersection are there?
The common layouts are a perpendicular crossing, a T-intersection where one taxiway joins another, and an angled intersection where a taxiway branches off at an acute or obtuse angle.
Q3Why are the corners of a taxiway intersection curved?
The pavement is widened at the corners with curved fillets so that an aircraft turning through the intersection keeps its wheels on the paved surface. Where edge lights are provided they follow the fillet.
Q4How does a taxiway intersection affect the AGL layout?
Blue edge lights, where provided, outline the pavement including the fillets, each route keeps its own green centreline lights, and a holding position may be added where traffic must stop or give way. See the Taxiway Intersection Lighting entry for the detail.
See It. Understand It. Then Learn How to Engineer It.
Recognising an AGL system visually is the first step. The next step is knowing how to design, install, test, commission and maintain them correctly.
