How do heated inset fixtures keep the window clear?

A heated inset fixture adds a small heater at the optical window, so frost and thin ice are held off at the source. Pick a condition to see what the heater does, and what happens when it does not.

What happens

With the window above freezing, the thermostat stays open and the heater draws no power. The fixture behaves like any inset light and the window is clear.

What to do

Test the heater and its control before the cold season. It is idle in mild weather, so a failed heater looks the same as a working one until the first freezing night.

The Fact Winter operations

A heated inset fixture carries a small electric heater at its optical window. When the window nears freezing the heater warms it, so frost and thin ice are held off at the source and the low beam leaves the prism as designed instead of being scattered by a film of ice.

The heater is normally switched by a thermostat or temperature sensor in or near the fixture, so it runs only when needed; some installations use a controller or pavement sensor to enable the heating supply. It is an extra electrical load, and how it is supplied differs by product and design, so circuit loading must include it.

Heating keeps a window clear; it is not a substitute for snow clearing. It is aimed at frost, thin ice and a small melt pocket, and a heater that fails or sticks on creates its own problems, because it can stay hidden until the weather exposes it.

Heated fixture

Warms the window when it is cold, so frost and thin ice are held off. Adds load and one more part to test and inspect.

Unheated LED fixture

Runs cool and relies on clearing and cleaning once ice or snow has formed on the window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1How does a heated inset fixture work?

A small electric heating element at the optical window warms it when conditions approach freezing. A thermostat or a controlled supply switches the heater on, so frost and thin ice are held off and the beam stays clear.

Q2Do heated fixtures melt snow on the runway?

No. The heater is meant to keep the window clear of frost, thin ice and light snow. It does not clear snow from the pavement, so normal snow clearing and the site winter-operations procedure still apply.

Q3Why heat an LED fixture if it already runs cool?

Because an LED puts little heat into the window, it does not clear itself of ice and snow the way a hot lamp partly does. A heater supplies that warmth only when it is needed.

Q4Can a heater fail without anyone noticing?

Yes. The light usually still comes on, and the heater is idle in mild weather, so a failed heater can look healthy until ice forms. That is why heaters are tested before winter and checked again in cold conditions.

Q5Does the heater add load to the lighting circuit?

It adds electrical load. Depending on the product and the design, that load sits on the same circuit through the isolating transformer or on a separate supply, and heater power should be counted when the circuit is sized and checked.

Q6What should be checked on heated fixtures?

That the heater and its thermostat or control work before the cold season, that the window warms when it should and stays cool when it should not, and that seals, connectors and housings show no heat damage. Follow the manufacturer's test method.
